1994 Inteleg Licensed Exclusive: Spawn the Model Kit
This is the first official appearance of Spawn, albeit that of an unpainted model kit sculpted by John Dennet and produced by Inteleg, a Japanese model kit company.
Bonedust (a resident expert in spawn message board) explained that in 1992, the kit was offered with the release of the first comic but it failed to appear. In 1993, it was advertised again and yet again, failed to appear. It finally hit the street only in the summer of 1994. Curiously enough, the 1996 Wizard Spawn Tribute Edition mentioned plan for a Spawn vinyl model kit, wonder what they are referring to?
And the official model kit quickly spawned a knock-off in the lovely kingdom of Thailand.
I sent both figures to the experts for painting, in this case, the guys at XenoMorph. Of course I was delighted when I picked them up. And frankly, my pictures did not do justice to the incredible painting put up by them.
This appeared in eBay in 2009. According to the seller, this is a 17" prototype resin kit, not the vinyl version sold by Inteleg and there are only estimated to be 33 of them. Well, I am not sure of the authenticity as a prototype but resin would be useful, my vinyl version has warped badly.
Other model kits, more appropriately termed as garage kits since they are not officially sanctioned by McFarlane Toys started to appear (clueless of date).
And no prize for guessing who painted this figure, it is lovely to behold.
This garage kit is based on the Movie and is also known as Movie Spawn (no relation to Movie Spawn from the Movie Series). Again, it is not officially sanctioned. The one on the left is a recast of a garage kit and the one on the right is a plastic version from Thailand.
I was hoping for something different instead of two similar figures but I just cannot fault the work, it's incredible. The smaller guy on the right is from Thailand.
A 1/6th scale resin model kit sculpted by Paul Fay and found in eBay in November 2005.
