SPAWN: MUTATIONS

When will they ever learn? Masked Spawn sells, ugly Spawns don’t! After the fabulous Image Spawn in December 2002, McFarlane Toys released in May 2003 a mutated Spawn under Series 23: Mutations which was poorly received. This series marks the end of the ongoing repaint series.

May 2003 Series 23 Original: Spawn
The figure is sold simply as Spawn but it is more commonly referred to either as Mutation Spawn or Mutated Spawn.

The story is inspired by Spawn #100: “One pivotal event in the Hellspawn mythos is Spawn's slaying of his master, Malebolgia. But what if this event had gone differently? What if Malebolgia did not die? This premise is the inspiration for Spawn Series 23: Mutations, which reveals a twisted vision of the Spawn world that could have been.”

In order to fight the still-living leader of Hell, Malebolgia, Spawn must delve deep into his dark side. Calling forth the primal power to change his form -- the same power that allowed Clown to transform into Violator -- Spawn now mutates into a demonic alter-ego of his own. To fight the beast, Spawn must become a beast.

Following images of 2-UP Sculpts provided by sculptorscorner.com. That should dispel the myth that this figure is from the mould of Alien Spawn 2.

The advertisement said that the premise for this series is that of a twisted vision of the Spawn world, twisted is about right for the rest of the crew but the female figure of Warrior Lilith remains delightfully svelte and undressed. The pic on the left is from spawn.com and on the right is an unpainted prototype.
