Following the success of the first manga lineup of Series 9 featuring Manga Spawn and Manga Ninja Spawn, it was only natural that a sequel be introduced, the second Manga lineup of Series 10 in April 1988 introducing Manga Dead Spawn and Manga Samurai Spawn.
April 1998 Series 10 Original: Manga Dead Spawn
To date, there is only one version of Manga Dead Spawn, making him the oldest Spawn figure not to have either a repaint or an exclusive, rather weird considering that there are far uglier and less popular Spawn that have other versions to their name.
Manga Dead Spawn vs Zombie Spawn
From the above images (Dead Spawn on left and Zombie Spawn on right), it does look like that the mould of the oxymoronic Zombie Spawn was not destroyed when he was made. Manga Dead Spawn shares many similarities - belt, rotting body, loincloth and even that chainsaw of a hand.
When one compare the Manga Dead Spawn to this image taken from spawn.com, one couldn't help notice that it seems that the manufactured version turns out to be vastly different from the prototype, most noticeably, a shredded (battle damaged) loincloth.
It is a puzzling figure to say the least: a figure with no other version, a figure that is a copy of Zombie Spawn and a figure unlike that in the official website.
Manga Dead Spawn has its plus points - there is the two-sided head, a skull-like head with horns facing front and a droopy robot head with horns facing back.
There is also the option of a mask for the skull-like head, a domino-like mask to cover up the ugly mug.
Manga Dead Spawn can also be displayed facing either front or back, not that it makes much of a sense, haha.
Display collectors can have two of him and displayed both Masked and Unmasked. For card collector, note that due to erroneous quality control, some of the figures did not come with a mask displayed on the card - resulting in a healthy trade exchange in eBay.
