"After an apocalyptic battle on earth, life is no longer as it was - it has drastically changed. Spawn is evidence of this, having transformed into a dual being. To fight evil, he uses his outer shelf, a harmless looking insect-like creature as camouflage to lure the enemy near. When the foe is close enough, this mutant Spawn springs into action. Ready to fight, he uses his tail, tentacles and tongue, which are all poisonous and deadly." (see back of the box)
By now, every collector would have know that this lizard-like Spawn is meant to be titled "Chameleon Spawn" until budget restrictions (making the paint change colours) hit. Despite it being a box set edition of Series 6 in August 1996, this is to date one of the cheapest Spawn figure in the resale market. There are only two official versions.
August 1996 Series 6 Boxset Original: Mutant Spawn
Two poseable tentacles and rust-coloured body. There are various variantions to this figure, all depending on the whims and fancy of our comrades in China - the first shipment received two wings while the later shipments have four wings (check out End Cap February 1997). They must be really having fun with the variations and laughing their socks off knowing it would drive collectors bonkers!
November 1996 Series 6 Boxset Repaint: Mutant Spawn
The November 1996 repaint has 4 bendable tentacles and the figure comes with blue stripes all over his body. Some have tan patches all over the body. Others have red shoulder-eyes, tan patches and jaw whilst others have silver shoulder-eyes with blue patches and jaw (End Cap February 1997).
Another easily recognisable difference between the two versions is that of the face - the original on the left is brown with black tongue while the repaint on the right is green with red tongue.
A pewter-washed exclusive from a "collector's club" :)
