January 1997 MTCC Exclusive Series 3 Repaint: Spawn II
Series 3 repainted figure were never released via retail. It was instead released under the mail-order collectors' club network. Another set of separate Series 3 repaints were test marketed in Mexico, commonly known as the Spanish edition. The repainted Spawn III is in brown rather than maroon. Note that if you read the End Cap of January 1997, it proclaimed NO REPAINTS for these figures.

January 1997 MTCC Exclusive Series 3 Repaint: Ninja Spawn
The 'repainted' Ninja Spawn in silver rather than black. It contains a really ugly repainted head so covering him with a hood is compulsory. Because figures from 'Series 3 Repaint' can be brought individually and not as a set, this Ninja Spawn 'repaint' has the poorest resale record which ironically makes it the rarest of the three!

February 1997 Series 7 Original: Zombie Spawn
Besides Spawn III, an oxymoronic spawn called Zombie Spawn was also introduced. You got to wonder which came first, undead as Spawn or undead as Zombie, either way, he is terribly ugly and really unlikeable.

May 1997 Cannes Film Festival Exclusive: Spawn
Spawn: The Movie was one of the participant at the Cannes Films Festival and to commemorate the event, a souvenir was released, many collectors erroneously described it as 3", it is not, it is a very healthy 6". Official site said release date is January 1997 - what they meant is that the figure was made in January 1997. It was sent to the festival which runs from May 7th to the 18th. Note that the movie was released on August 1st 1997 in the US but only in February and November 1998 in Japan and Singapore respectively.

May 1997 Series 7 Repaint: Spawn III
Also in the same month we have the repaint version of Series 7. Spawn III is exactly the same except that this time he is accompanied by a wolf. Without the companion of either the wolf or owl, you cannot tell the original apart from the repaint. A display collector may or may not want to include them in their display.

The latter, with a sword inscribed with Chinese characters is more commonly seen. The above version is that of Manga Spawn in brick red with plastic chain
