In the battle for the Dark Ages, the wizard Merlin summoned Sir Bartholomew - the Black Knight and once the enemy of King Arthur from the Darkness to save Camelot. And with that, McFarlane Toys leave themselves with the ardous task of trying to reinvent the wheel when it was discovered that there is one Black Knight too many.
There are three versions to Bartholomew, the Black Knight Spawn:
v v.1 the original figure was introduced in July 1998 in the very first Dark Ages line under Series 11. An extremely popular figure despite sores all over the body, haha. There is a variant to this figure, apparently some careless production operators forget to smear red paints on the axe, resulting in collectibles’ paradise. Check the figure out in blackaris website. Before it went defunct, spawncollectorsguide.com quoted an average of US$113 in April 2003 for this variant.
There are also variants which include figures with clear twist tie, black twist tie, rectangular cards, curved die cut card...etc...well, there are people who take it very seriously...
The figure can be displayed with or without the helmet. No prize for guessing my preference.
The repaint, v.2 that appeared in February 1999 is quite a popular figure among collectors.
Having created a comic series, Spawn the Dark Ages in March 1999 and naming Sir Covenant as a Black Knight, McFarlane Toys left itself in quite a dilemma as to how to title their dark ages Spawn. Viola, let's re-reborn him! In June 2004, the former Sir Bartholomew has been titled as Spawn the Raven Knight in Reborn Series 2. But in all aspects, he is but Bartholomew the Black Knight Spawn v.3.
