Interlinks - The Prequel to Cyber Units
In March 2001, six Spawns are released under Series 18 as the Interlink Spawns. Series 18 consists of six Spawns – HD1, TS2, RL3, LL4, RA5 and LA6 and like transformers, they can link up to form a giant Spawn, the Interlink-6 Spawn. See guide on Interlink Spawns for more details.
In June 2004, a repainted figure of RL3 was released as part of Reborn Series 2 and titled as “Interlink Spawn” sparking speculation that future Reborn Series would introduce other repainted figures. Well, the speculation is not pointless, if there is nothing for this RL3 Spawn to interlink with, the title of Interlink Spawn would be downright silly.
Hopes for a repainted Interlink-6 Spawn have apparently been dashed with the appearance of a new collection known as “McFarlane’s Cyber Units”
Spawn Reborn 4
According to spawn.com, this series, dubbed "Spawn Reborn 4, with a twist" is not meant for old collectors like us…”. Cyber Units are heavily-articulated and highly-detailed robotic action figures meant for new fans and collectors”. Darn, old collectors like us are so under-appreciated.
The Cyber Units
A story was devised to give excuses to the creation of the figures that are basically repaints of Interlink Spawns and it is as follows:
1,000 years into the future, governments are replaced by corporations. One of this company, in order to protect itself from corporate espionage copied the design first mooted in 2001 (that shows you how advanced a thousand years later these designers become) into a series of cybernetic units aka Cyber Units. They branded those units as:
Battle Unit (spawn formerly known as LA6)
Brute Unit (sfka RA5)
Defender Unit (sfka RL3v1 and RL3v2)
Guardian Unit (sfka RA5)
Infiltrator Unit (sfka HD1)
Viral Unit (sfka LL4)
Ironically, this company which copied a Year 2001 design forgot to lock their front door and soon copies of the designs were made available to two other bigger corporations who decide to build an army of their own. So, there you have it, robotic warfare between three MNC! Imagine a board meeting where the Chief Security Officer is the head honcho!
More Irony
1,000 years later and those abysmal future designers are not able to get their cyber units to “transform” into a giant super-cyber unit. Imagine how awesome their robots would be if it adopt the design of Interlink-6 Spawn.
Hope Springs Eternal
We seriously doubt that it can be considered as part and parcel of the Spawn family and we are awfully upset…but one of us is a huge science fiction fan and she was delighted with the series (she is also the one who actually managed to build the 18” Interlink-6 Spawn without it falling apart). She is counting on more innovative cyber units to come which is quite apparent since the figures are numbered 001...hope springs eternal, remember. And yes, she intends to join the figures up into another 18” Interlink-6 Spawn, with lots of superglue I suppose.
