2003
January 2003 NTF Exclusive: Spawn
The Image 10th Anniversary Spawn released a month before was transformed into a silver-washed figure for the 2003 Nurberg Toy Fair in Germany. One of my favourite.
April 2003 Reborn Series 1: Curse of the Spawn II
This repaint takes 4 years and released as part of the new series simply titled Reborn Series and it would become a regular event, replacing the repaints – Curse of the Spawn II has black body instead of white.
April 2003 Reborn Series 1: Raven Spawn
Raven Spawn is now more reddish.
April 2003 Reborn Series 1: Wings of Redemption Spawn
Wings of Redemption Spawn came with bat wings instead of the beautiful angelic wings.
May 2003 Series 23 Original: Spawn
Series 23 is known as Mutations Series, it is based on a what-if scenario - what if Spawn failed to kill Malebolgia in Spawn #150? This series, after a fantastic and very well-received Series 21, is really depressing and uninspiring. It does makes one wonder if the powers to be one at McFarlane Toys ever studied their marketing data.
May 2003 Series 23 Original: Al Simmons
Al Simmons popped up for the 4th time and as the theme is about mutation, he is pretty ugly.
May 2003 Series 23 Variant: Al Simmons
I wrote and was informed that except for packaging inconsistencies such as some packed with helmet, some without; there is no variant or repaint for this series! And yet there exists this bloody version. Unintentional? Very unlikely, unless those Chinese lasses at the production floor dabbed red paints on him deliberately...and in large numbers.
July 2003 SDCC Exclusive: Spawn + Miracleman
2003 San Diego Comicon Exclusive – “Spawn + Miracleman” - it was advertised as the dawning of a brave new world of 4” figures, how I wish there are more of them besides this miniaturised version of Spawn VI…
August 2003 Retail Exclusive: Spawn
Released as a toy series from the Soul Calibur II video game. There are two versions: masked version is exclusive to GameStop in the US. This is an exact duplicate released earlier under 2003 SDCC Exclusive. The difference is in the accessory, this second version has an axe.
August 2003 Retail Exclusive: Spawn
And the unmasked version is exclusive to EB Games in the US. This third version of the 4" Spawn VI is rarer but ironically less popular.
October 2003 Series 24 Original: Hellspawn i.001
This series launched the hugely popular Art of Spawn franchise (I still remember the excitement this series creates even with non-Spawn collectors). Known then as the Classic Comic Cover Series because it is based on the covers of Spawn comics. Hellspawn i.001 refers to figure based on the cover art of Hellspawn #1, a spinoff from the regular Spawn comics.
October 2003 Series 24 Original: Spawn i.039
Later known more as Santa Spawn. This is the unmasked original version based on the art cover of Spawn #39.
October 2003 Series 24 Variant: Spawn i.039
The second production of this series has different packaging on the cover and includes the masked variants of Spawn i.039 and Spawn i.088. It was initially thought that the masked variants were exclusive to France but a check with McFarlane Toys indicate that the shipment simply arrived earlier over there before it reached Toys R Us and Wal-Mart in the US. This second production wave incidentally never reached our fair shores.
October 2003 Series 24 Original: Spawn i.043
The flying Spawn i.043 with bats copied over from the Movie Series days.
October 2003 Series 24 Original: Spawn i.064
The techno-security Spawn.
October 2003 Series 24 Original: Spawn i.088
The Halloween Spawn
October 2003 Series 24 Variant: Spawn i.088
Again, a masked variant for any Spawn in this series that is not properly covered up.
October 2003 Series 24 Original: Spawn i.109
The wall descending Spawn.
October 2003 Series 24 MTCC Exclusive
This MTCC exclusive - Spawn on a gargoyle i.098 was sold out within 9 days! The original prototype is masked.
November 2003 Series 24 Box Set: Spawn the Dark Ages i.023
What an anticlimax! The boxset of Series 24 arrived a month later and it is truly pathetic, what a letdown as compared to Thunderhoof in Series 22. The first appearance of Lord Covenant is as "Spawn the Dark Ages i.023", quite a mouthful. See Guide for more details on the naming of this figure.
Display collector has the option of an alternate head.
