1 June 2011 - Norse Hellspawn WIP
Busy with work and no time to finish the Norse Hellspawn.
As the helmet horn was not really closed to the reference image accurately, I rebuilt another pair of horn. In order to support the recycling, I used the original horn to create another side product – Viki-Spawn. When my girlfriend saw this side product, she grabbed it. She was kidding; she said she must sell it on ebay.

From McFarlane Toys, in the fifth Series of Spawn Toys, came the first European-theme based Spawn, Viking Spawn.
Released in 1996, Spawn FAN Edition #1 is an 8-page short story inserted into Overstreet's FAN #16. It features the very first Spawn story that was inspired by this figure.
In this story, Malebolgia relates a tale of this very bad Spawn named Nordik the Norse Hellspawn. This Hellspawn is considered as a benchmark to which other Spawns are measured.
Viking Spawn figure stands at 5 1/2 inches, it is in scale with the earlier figures of the Spawn series. However, compared to the newer figures, it is too short to be displayed with the newer Spawn series. I think it is time to create new Viking spawn, Norse Hellspawn, with newer Spawn series standard.
Base figure: Neca SDCC 09 Exclusives Lambent Locust Grenadier
Reference Art: Nordik the Norse Hellspawn from Spawn FAN Edition #1
Concept board:
The concept board merging Nordik the Norse Hellspawn, Lord Covenant's Spawn the Black Knight and Spawn from Architects of Fear.
Work In Progress: Sculpting works added
Images of the completed work to be available soon.

My girlfriend knows I like to collect the monster style stuff; she got me a gargoyle candleholder from a bric-à-brac last weekend. The candleholder is just wonderful. Never expected that it is prefect match to the Spawn V. I like it so much, check out this great stuff.

Thanks to Hunter R for hooking me up to Cracked Super #14 included in December 1997. There is a link there to the complete 4-page special, so do look it up.
Okay, so I learned from a seller that eBay removed every Spawn Prototype that were in their list...well, spawn lovers would be delighted to learn that some did get through! Check out this Megabass Flatside Real Bait Magic Floating Minnow FX9 Prototype Spawn Killer Kit DVD.
Guarding the Globe #4 is out and along with it, Spawn enjoying a burger, Burger King I hope, that's my favourite. Wendy is fine too but McDonald? I give it a wide miss.
The art is so dark in #205, so dark and I do not mean "dark" as in horror-theme kind of dark but the whole magazine is so dark as in opposite DC and Marvel dark kind of dark. You have to strain and squint your eyes to digest the image! There was a reprieve in the opening few pages with a wonderful illustration of New York City but otherwise the whole impression of this issue (and every issue since #200) is that pages are darkened to meet the deadline. And I am glad the Old Guards swing into action cos' I been praying that AJ Lieberman takes pity of Spawn and volunteer his services.

I am skeptical of prototype that looks too "complete" but I knew the sellers of Sunny Side Up (ssushop) and they are classy people. So, if they said this is a carded sample, I trust them. The link to eBay, go and satisfy your insatiable thirst for more Spawns! (Update on 27 March 2011 - the link no longer works...)

Batboy 13 Alert Notice has been top notched! We are very grateful (very) for the Alert. In the movie "Paul", see how many Spawn items you are able to spot. In the spinning comics rack alone, there is Spawn (am not sure which issue) and Spawn the Dark Ages (issue 11 I think) and on the front shelf, there is Spawn Alley playset, Spawn 10th Anniversary figure and a peripheral figure from Spawn Series 9.

I wished I have answers to some of the questions that are directed to me, sigh...example: is there ever going to be another Spawn figure? Wouldn't it be nice if this blog is granted the priviledge to make a pre-announcement! Well, Brian, we can only hope and hope is powerful, it springs eternal, maybe some kind soul would start coming out with garage kit again. Meanwhile, there is this Series 36 Crusher prototype in eBay. It was sold I believed for US181.49 last month so either this is a second copy or the deal fell through. Go and bid for it, it is not Spawn but a peripheral character but hopefully it will take away the pain of not having new spawn figures.
Both Hunter R and I are in awe of this nation's quiet dignity. The strength and courage displayed by the Japanese despite the triple whammy of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear radiation are awe-inspiring. We have debated as to what to write in our blog but we just couldn't get the words out, there are times when speech cannot improve the silence.

Spawn: The Beginning statue was displayed in Todd's office. Just for curiosity, any chance, we could see this statue hanging out on our desk.... Picture source : twitpic

One year ago, this image from Hobby Japan magazine was posted here by Hunter R.
Well, it appeared in McFarlane interview on G4TV again. So, this is a limited edition licensed out to a Japanese company, great, just great, just when I thought that this is but a garage kit version, it turns out that this is official. Darn, my official collection is never going to be complete, grrrrh.
